Hobart Hotel Accommodations and What it Means to You

view of Hoabart harbour in Tasmania.
The magical beauty of the harbour in Hobart,
Tasmania.
Located between stunning Mount Wellington and the Derwent estuary, Hobart is characterized by stone buildings, rough bushland, rich wines and sparkling waters. Many travel to Hobart, Tasmania, to explore the historic sites, the national parks and the rugged lands beyond the city. Plenty of Hobart hotel accommodation is available to ensure your comfort during your stay in this beautiful city.

Hobart is the second oldest city in the country. Founded in 1803, Hobart was once a penal colony where second-time offenders were sent to serve out their sentences after they arrived in Sydney and reoffended. Many of these early penal colonies with their restored buildings and museums still exist today, including Sarah Station and Port Arthur. Although originally intended as a penal colony, the beautiful island of Tasmania also attracted free men and women. These settlers tended to build their homes and businesses alongside the Derwent River where they were well placed to export goods to the rest of the country and the world. Many people continue to travel to Hobart today to experience all the best this historic city has to offer.

Tasmania is located about 240 kilometres south of the mainland and is separated by the Bass Strait. Flights from Melbourne to Tasmania take about an hour while flights from Brisbane to Tasmania take about two hours. Surrounded by the vast untamed wilderness of Tasmania, Hobart is set on the Derwent River with picturesque old world buildings scattered along the wharf, lively weekend markets of Salamanca Place, art galleries and the Maritime Museum of Tasmania. Dining al fresco is a popular activity, and seafood is a favourite here as are Thai, Mexican, Indian and mod-Oz.

Port Arthur is a popular destination as well. Nestled in native bush and beautiful gardens, the site contains 30 buildings and a visitors’ centre with interactive displays. The Tasman Peninsula Convict Trail can take you even more deeply into the island state’s history. The trail, which stretches alongside the coast of the Tasman National Park, treks through seven different locations, including Wedge Bay, the Coal Mines and Eaglehawk Neck.

Accommodations in Hobart are varied and can be found to meet numerous needs and budgets. The city has discount and budget hotels and motels starting around $119 a night as well as luxury resorts, which are often located within minutes from the CBD and offer spectacular views of Mount Wellington and the Huon Valley. Family style and services apartments are also available and are often the accommodations of choice for those who are staying for more than a week or two or who are visiting with a group of friends or family.

Bed-and-breakfasts are tucked away in quiet, out-of-the-way spots and overlooking lush vineyards. Although they look quaint, these award-winning B&Bs feature all modern amenities and access to all the attractions you wish to visit during your stay. Boutique hotels can offer remarkable luxury and personalized service often at a surprisingly affordable price. Backpacker’s hostels tend to be tucked away in more populated areas and can provide a safe, comfortable, affordable stay with basic amenities covered.
