With over four million inhabitants, Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia. The city's idyllic position, overlooking the Port Phillip Bay, attracts a large number of both national and international visitors every year.
To accommodate this large number of tourists, Melbourne boasts a large number of hotel and accommodation options. Hotels in Melbourne vary greatly in standard. If your budget allows, you may wish to select one of the luxurious five star hotels overlooking the bay. Alternatively, there are a large number of guest houses and youth hostels catering for the beach lovers and surfers in and around the beach resorts of Portsea and Sorrento.
As would be expected from such a major cosmopolitan city, as well as the obvious natural attractions that Melbourne has to offer, there are also a large number of places of historical and cultural interest to visit in and around the city. In fact, Melbourne is often referred to as the cultural capital of Australia.
Notable places of interest would include the Royal Exhibition Building and the National Gallery of Victoria, the largest and oldest art gallery in Australia.
For a spot of retail therapy, Melbourne boasts a number of shopping malls, many pleasantly situated alongside one of the parks and gardens for which the city is renowned for.
